Welcome to Adobe™ Acrobat™ Reader 2.1 for Macintosh.
Adobe Acrobat Reader lets you view and print any Portable Document Format (PDF) file. You’ll find several PDF files on your computer’s hard disk and on the system software CD that came with your computer. These PDF files contain instructions for using many of the special software programs that came with your computer.
This document explains how to install Acrobat Reader and contains the latest Acrobat Reader information. For detailed information about using Acrobat Reader, refer to the Acrobat Reader On-line Guide (Acrobat™ Reader Help), a PDF file available after you install Acrobat Reader.
Installing Acrobat Reader
The Acrobat Reader Installer is located in the same folder as this document. If you are viewing this document in the Apple Extras folder on your computer’s hard disk, you are ready to install Acrobat Reader. Skip the next paragraph and go to step 1 below.
If you are viewing this document in the Apple Extras folder on the system software CD that came with your Macintosh, before you install Acrobat Reader you must make sure the CD is not the startup disk. If it is the startup disk (or if you’re not sure), restart the computer while pressing and holding the eject button on the CD-ROM drive. After the computer starts up, reinsert the CD.
To install Acrobat Reader, follow these steps:
1. Locate the installer file named Adobe Acrobat Reader v2.1. It is in the same folder as this document—the folder named Adobe Acrobat Reader 2.1, in the Apple Extras folder on both the hard disk and the system software CD. The installer file looks like this:
2. Double-click the Adobe Acrobat Reader v2.1 installer to open it.
3. Click Continue.
4. Read the license agreement, then click Continue.
5. Click Install to install Acrobat Reader and accept the license agreement. (If you don’t want to accept the agreement, click Quit. Acrobat Reader will not be installed.)
6. A message appears informing you that your computer must be restarted after installation. Click Continue. (Installation takes a few minutes.)
7. When installation is complete, click Restart.
Now you can open and read PDF documents. Below is an example of a PDF document and its icon.
IMPORTANT The installer places Adobe Acrobat on your startup disk unless you designate a different disk. For ease of use and best performance, Adobe recommends that Acrobat Reader be installed on the startup disk.
Notes About Fonts
When you install Acrobat Reader 2.1, special software required for font substitution is placed in the System Folder.
• If no version of system-level Adobe Type Manager is present on your system at installation, ATM™ 3.8.3 is installed in the Adobe Acrobat Fonts folder for use by Acrobat only. This private copy of ATM is recognized and used only by Acrobat Reader 2.1 and uses memory only when Acrobat Reader is running.
• If ATM 3.8.2 or earlier is present on your system at installation, the installer updates to version 3.8.3. The ATM Font Database (required by Acrobat 2.1) is always installed loose the System folder.
• If QuickDraw GX is enabled at the time of installation, ATM™ 3.8.3 is installed. It is not possible to use the private version of ATM in conjunction with QuickDraw GX.
• Depending on whether QuickDraw GX is installed or turned on or off at the time of installation, different versions of the Adobe Acrobat substitution fonts Adobe Sans MM and Adobe Serif MM are installed.
• If TrueType versions of Times, Helvetica, Courier, Symbol, or Zapf Dingbats are installed on your system, they are not replaced nor moved. If you are using Type 1 versions of these fonts, updated versions of the Type 1 fonts Times, Helvetica, Courier, Symbol and Zapf Dingbats are installed.
Troubleshooting
You see a Font Not Found error message.
ATM may not have enough memory to create a substitute font. Open the Apple () menu and choose Control Panels. Double-click the ATM control panel to open it, and increase the size of the ATM Font Cache. (If you don't see the ATM control panel, you are using the private copy of ATM that works only with Acrobat Reader and does not include the control panel. To make more memory available to Acrobat Reader, try quitting other application programs or restart your computer.)
You can’t use Acrobat Reader after installing QuickDraw GX, or turning QuickDraw GX on or off.
Acrobat Reader 2.1 installs different fonts depending on whether QuickDraw GX is turned on or off (enabled or disabled) at the time of installation.
If you install Acrobat Reader and later install, enable, or disable QuickDraw GX, you must reinstall Acrobat Reader 2.1 to be sure that the fonts required by Acrobat Reader 2.1 are installed in their proper locations. To reinstall Acrobat Reader 2.1, follow the instructions at the beginning of this document.
You experience problems printing a PDF file.
• If QuickDraw GX is installed and turned on (enabled), desktop printing must be turned on. Do not use the QuickDraw GX Helper to turn off desktop printing.
• For best printing results, use PSPrinter 8.2.1 (or later) driver from Adobe. PSPrinter 8.2.1 is not included with Acrobat Reader. Contact Adobe at 1-800-521-1976 for information on purchasing printer drivers.
• If you are using the private copy of ATM in the Adobe Acrobat Fonts folder background printing is not available. (To find out if you are using the private copy of ATM, open the Apple () menu and choose Control Panels. If you are using the private copy there will be no ATM control panel in the folder.)
• To print a document on a PostScript Level 2 printer using the Adobe PSPrinter 8.X or Apple LaserWriter 8 printer drivers, you must update the Printer Info after you select the printer in the Chooser. During setup, make sure to select the specific PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file for your particular printer. Avoid selecting the “Generic” PPD file.
Memory
The minimum memory requirement for Acrobat Reader 2.1 is 2048K. Do not change the minimum memory setting. The preferred memory size is 3100K.
To increase the memory available for Acrobat Reader 2.1, select the Acrobat Reader icon in the Finder, open the File menu, and choose Get Info. In the Memory Requirements section, increase the number shown in the Preferred size box.
Using the Weblink tool with Acrobat Reader
To use the Weblink plug-in to follow URL links, you must set up your web browser to recognize Acrobat Reader. See the Adobe Home Page (http://www.adobe.com) for information on configuring your browser to recognize PDF documents.
To install the Weblink plug-in:
1. Copy the Weblink plug-in to the Adobe Acrobat Plug-ins folder. If you just installed Acrobat Reader 2.1, the Weblink plug-in may already be in in the Plug-ins folder.
2. Open Acrobat Reader.
To select your web browser:
1. Choose Edit>Preferences>Weblink
2. Click Select, then select your web browser application file from the Open File dialog box.
3. Choose a connection type. Standard is the connection type for the currently supported browsers—Netscape 1.1 and Spyglass 2.0.
Tips
• If you open two copies of the Acrobat Reader or Exchange programs with Weblink installed, the second viewer terminates.
• Spyglass Mosaic displays a temporary filename for PDF documents in place of the document title.
• Weblink cannot display files from ftp locations from Spyglass Mosaic. Download the PDf file and open it manually from Acrobat.
• Spyglass Mosaic does not automatically come to the front when you click on a link with a URL target. Use the web browser button in the toolbar to bring the web browser to the front.
Using the OLE Plug-In
If the OLE plug-in for Acrobat Reader 2.1 is installed for communication with other application programs such as Lotus Notes, please note:
• If double-clicking an embedded or linked PDF file does not launch Acrobat Reader 2.1, Acrobat Reader probably has not been added to the registration database. Make sure that the OLE plug-in is in the Acrobat Plug-ins folder and that OLE is installed in the System Folder before you start Acrobat Reader 2.1.
• Acrobat Reader 2.1 does not support opening an embedded or linked PDF file that requires an open password.
• Acrobat Reader 2.1 supports opening embedded or linked files, but does not support embedding or inserting PDF files into another document. OLE displays error messages if you attempt to embed or insert files with Acrobat Reader.
• With some applications such as Lotus Notes, the system may beep and appear to freeze when you attempt to open a PDF document. Make Acrobat the active application (bring it to the front) and quit the other application. Errors that might cause this behavior include too many files open, an open password required for the document, and low memory conditions.
• If you are not using OLE, remove the OLE plug-in from the Adobe Acrobat Plug-ins folder to decrease Acrobat Reader’s launch time and memory use.

To take full advantage of the benefits of electronic documents, you can purchase Acrobat, Acrobat Pro, or Acrobat for Workgroups using the coupon labeled “Coupon.pdf,” or by calling 800-87-ADOBE (800-872-3623). With the Acrobat products, you can:
• Use PDF Writer to easily create electronic documents from your own application programs.
• Use passwords to protect your files, to control access to the document and limit printing, altering, and copying the document.
• Search multiple PDF files by keywords, author, title, subject, and synonyms.
• Reuse information easily by extracting, copying, reordering, and replacing pages among PDF files, without disturbing bookmarks, links, and notes.
• Create your own custom views of information.
• Add value, set priorities, and maintain a dynamic information network with links, bookmarks, notes, and connections to external applications and documents.
• Use third-party plug-ins to add new features to Acrobat.
• Integrate Acrobat with your desktop applications with Acrobat's support for AppleEvents, OLE automation, Notes F/X, and more.

NOTICE TO USER:
THIS IS A CONTRACT. BY INSTALLING THIS SOFTWARE YOU ACCEPT ALL THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS AGREEMENT.
This Adobe Systems Incorporated ("Adobe") End User License Agreement accompanies an Adobe™ software product and related explanatory written materials ("Software"). The term “Software” shall also include any upgrades, modified versions or updates of the Software licensed to you by Adobe. This copy of the Software is licensed to you as the end user. Please read this Agreement carefully.
Adobe grants to you a nonexclusive license to use the Software, provided that you agree to the following:
1. Use of the Software.
• You may install the Software in a single location on a hard disk or other storage device; install and use the Software on a file server for use on a network for the purpose of permanent installation onto hard disks or other storage devices or use of the Software over such network; and make backup copies of the Software.
• You may make unlimited copies of the Software and give copies to other persons or entities as long as the copies contain this Agreement and the same copyright and other proprietary notices that appear on or in the Software.
2. Copyright. The Software is owned by Adobe and its suppliers, and its structure, organization and code are the valuable trade secrets of Adobe and its suppliers. The Software is also protected by United States Copyright Law and International Treaty provisions. You agree not to modify, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble or otherwise attempt to discover the source code of the Software. You may use trademarks only to identify printed output produced by the Software, in accordance with accepted trademark practice, including identification of trademark owner’s name. Such use of any trademark does not give you any rights of ownership in that trademark. Except as stated above, this Agreement does not grant you any intellectual property rights in the Software.
3. Transfer. You may not rent, lease, or sublicense the Software. You may, however, transfer all your rights to use the Software to another person or entity, provided that you transfer this Agreement with the Software.
4. No Warranty. The Software is being delivered to you AS IS and Adobe makes no warranty as to its use or performance. ADOBE AND ITS SUPPLIERS DO NOT AND CANNOT WARRANT THE PERFORMANCE OR RESULTS YOU MAY OBTAIN BY USING THE SOFTWARE OR DOCUMENTATION. ADOBE AND ITS SUPPLIERS MAKE NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, AS TO NONINFRINGEMENT OF THIRD PARTY RIGHTS, MERCHANTABILITY, OR FITNESS FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE. IN NO EVENT WILL ADOBE OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL OR SPECIAL DAMAGES, INCLUDING ANY LOST PROFITS OR LOST SAVINGS, EVEN IF AN ADOBE REPRESENTATIVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY CLAIM BY ANY THIRD PARTY. 5. Governing Law and General Provisions. This Agreement will be governed by the laws of the State of California, U.S.A., excluding the application of its conflicts of law rules. This Agreement will not be governed by the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, the application of which is expressly excluded. If any part of this Agreement is found void and unenforceable, it will not affect the validity of the balance of the Agreement, which shall remain valid and enforceable according to its terms. You agree that the Software will not be shipped, transferred or exported into any country or used in any manner prohibited by the United States Export Administration Act or any other export laws, restrictions or regulations. This Agreement shall automatically terminate upon failure by you to comply with its terms. This Agreement may only be modified in writing signed by an authorized officer of Adobe.
6. Notice to Government End Users. If this product is acquired under the terms of a: GSA contract- Use, reproduction or disclosure is subject to the restrictions set forth in the applicable ADP Schedule contract; DoD contract- Use, duplication or disclosure by the Government is subject to restrictions as set forth in subparagraph (c) (1) (ii) of 252.227-7013; Civilian agency contract- Use, reproduction, or disclosure is subject to 52.227-19 (a) through (d) and restrictions set forth in the accompanying end user agreement.
